~Lena Horne
Everyone's history involves other people, even if those people are no longer present in our lives. None of us has survived completely on our own – even if it may feel that way. Inevitably, we are primarily shaped by other people and our own life experience. Working with this broader picture of life is fundamental to a Systems Therapy approach; it's the primary orientation I use when working with clients. Understanding the circumstances that have brought you (and/or your family) to therapy is going to have some roots in your own past patterns and behaviors, as well as those of the people who influence(d) you.
Tailoring therapy to meet your specific needs usually involves combining bits and pieces from a wide variety of therapeutic orientations. In addition to Systems Therapy, I draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Narrative Therapy, Structural Therapy, Existential Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, Somatic Experiencing®, and several others.
